When Rebecca Bradley flees a broken engagement and a toxic job in one disastrous week, she lands on her best friend’s West Village couch with a half-written play and the sinking fear that her playwriting talents have atrophied.

New York isn’t just a clean slate—it’s an audition to reclaim the life she gave up a decade ago. A stage for her solo second act… until she meets Miles Thompson.

Miles is everything Becca doesn’t need. He’s a chronically unimpressed, jazz musician/barista, who treats small talk like a federal offense and has a penchant for getting under her skin. But when she unexpectedly lands a job in his orbit, their initial friction morphs into a slow-burn rivalry laced with barbed wit, creative tension, and a sizzling chemistry neither is prepared for.

As Becca races to finish her entry for a make-or-break theatre festival, her tête-à-tête with Miles escalates into a series of daring bets. Their competition ignites her sharpest work yet, while her ambition nudges him to step into the spotlight. But as their flirtatious sparring gives way to something deeper, Becca must confront a lingering fear from her past—that letting someone in could derail the life she’s fought to rebuild.

When love threatens to compete with ambition, can she finally stop believing she has to choose one over the other?

IN DEVELOPMENT:

In grad school, Liv Carter and Jack Rhodes were the “it couple” of their film and TV program—right up until Jack walked away and left their perfectly plotted future on the cutting room floor. They haven’t spoken since.

Now, Liv—a staff writer on the hit teen soap Shelter Harbor—is tasked with delivering a season finale worthy of the show’s pending movie deal. A second-chance romance she’d rather not mine from her own romantic past. During her “research” Liv accidentally posts Jack’s name on social media, thinking she’d typed it into the search bar. Pulled into a meeting before she can realize, Liv later discovers her mistake and a message from Jack asking if she meant to reach out.

Mortified, Liv braces for humiliation. Instead, one cautious reply turns into a surprising back-and-forth, and then Jack asks to visit her on set in North Carolina—Hollywood's stand in for New England.

Over dinner, Jack reveals his true motivation: he needs a date to his boss, Food TV star, Grant Maddox’s multi-million-dollar New England wedding. Jack’s ex, now dating his coworker, will be there, and he’s already RSVP’d with a plus-one: his “new girlfriend.”

Liv refuses until a penitent Jack offers a trade. He’ll tour her along the real Rhode Island coast, anything she needs to write the perfect finale. All expenses paid.

Soon they’re traveling to his hometown, attending wedding events arm in arm, their fake dating blurring into something that feels real. But Jack still hasn’t explained why he walked away in the first place. And Liv has her own reasons for keeping him at a distance.

Are they destined to fall apart again, or is this one of those rare cases where the sequel’s better?
